Fallin' Into Fall

Oh Summer, we hardly knew ye. This summer, we enjoyed swimming in the river, visiting family in Missouri, and raising chicks who have just started laying eggs - they begin with smaller, cuter versions of the regular-size eggs. Now Autumn has arrived with a bit of rain to assuage the drought, and Humboldt has asked more than once, "Which comes first, Halloween or my birthday?" So I share with you some photos of summer, and hope that you also have fond memories of Summer 2014.

Humboldt invented his own cookie recipe (he accepted a few tips from Fred), and we baked them and found them to be delicious. On the blackboard he'd drawn a picture of Hunger. He's growing just as quickly as usual, and he's often "Hungry, like the grand canyon or a bottomless pit."

My parents took us to visit Missouri Botanical Gardens, which was featuring a Lego exhibit this summer - see the Lego flower in the background? Humboldt loved being with his extended family. Lily always takes good care of him, as seen by her cautious hand when Ralph and Brenda took us on a behind-the-scenes tour of Big Cat Country. That lion weighs over 300 pounds!

I found the tour of the new Busch Stadium fascinating, and I learned more about Cardinal and St. Louis history. The Redbirds and the Giants will get to see some postseason action next week.

We took Humboldt to see Crater Lake and Oregon Caves; he was impressed by the fact that we had to eat several meal in the rain - and thunder and lightning. Camping is always an adventure!

Above - the first day of 2nd-grade homeschool. So far, so good!

When people visit, I like to take them out to Friends of the Dunes on the spit. After a nice dunes to beach walk, we headed inland and stayed at Sky Crest Lake for the weekend. Humboldt and Fred didn't catch anything, but they sure look good trying.
