For this post, I've included photos of all the fun things a five year old gets to do. In junior sports camp, Coach Mike had the kids practice some football skills. Here's Humboldt place kicking in the gym at the Arcata Community Center. Then there's a shot of our cat, Rosebud, in the middle of the fairy ring of daffodils - they usually announce the coming of spring in early February. Below is Humboldt playing the violin that I played when I was young. Okay, he doesn't really play it, but doesn't he look precious anyway?
When we do science experiments, Humboldt and I call each other Doctor just for fun. Today he told me he's not so interested in sports, just jobs. When he grows up he wants to be a doctor, a farmer, a beekeeper, and usually a few other things - computer worker, palentologist, daddy, scientist. On Fridays, Bolt, as he's called by his swim teacher, takes lessons at the Arcata Community Pool with his friend, Cora, who is also five. Here they are riding sea horses, aka noodles, down a lane.
On Saturdays, we go up to the university for piano lessons through the Music Academy. He says he loves going, and he loves his teacher, Lee, so maybe someday he'll love practicing, too! He likes to play Hot Cross Buns on the black keys and make up songs of all sorts. He also likes to show off by playing the highest and lowest keys at the same time; they're 48" apart. Below is a photo of the front of the medical facility where Humboldt sees the doctor and dentist. The United Indian Health Services is a beautiful Yurok-inspired building that also has walking trails through a wetlands. That's Humboldt coming out through the round door, a favorite with kids.
And lastly, Grandmother Rock. She sits on the beach in Trinidad contemplating the vastness of the Pacific Ocean to the west. From the north side, the same rock looks like an Indian Chief's head. The weather was so nice one afternoon, Humboldt got wet building an eddy in Mill Creek. Also...we both felt our first California earth quake yesterday, a 5.5 centered inland a little ways from here. The house shook! I thought is was awesome.
